‘Ploddy’ a Diplodocus Puppet

In 2020 Norwich Cathedral will be hosting the national tour of “Dippy”, the iconic cast of a Diplodocus skeleton that until recently has spent the last 110 years looming over visitors as they enter London’s Natural History Museum. The Dean of Norwich has commissioned Tin House arts company to create a life size walking puppet of one of these Jurassic giants and once again I’ve been undertaking design and construction duties to help bring it to life.

‘Ploddy’ is created from aluminium, foam and pvc pipe, the two person back-pack carried and rod controlled puppet is over 8.5 metres (28 ft) in length 2.5 metres (8 ft) tall., which still only makes it a juvenile as the complete skeleton of Diplodocus carnegii is 24 metres (79 ft) long!
